The Ketogenic Diet Explained In One Minute

The ketogenic diet or keto as it is often called is a diet that is high in fat, moderate in protein and low in carbohydrate (sugars and starch). The result of eating this diet is that the body switches from burning glucose (sugar) for energy to burning fat. This is a major change in the way that the body burns fuel for energy and therefore it creates a significant change in the way you feel.

When the body starts to burn fat instead of carbohydrate for energy, your body goes into a metabolic state known as nutritional ketosis.  Essentially, your body learns to become highly efficient at burning fat for energy instead of carbohydrates. This means that when you don’t supply your body with many carbohydrates, it can use either fat from the food that you eat OR stored body fat for fuel. Once this occurs, you have become fat-adapted and this means you have become a fat burning machine. Stubborn fat that you have struggled to lose for years, magically disappears.

Several studies have shown the Ketogenic Diet to be very successful for weight loss. One of these studies showed that subjects on a low carb, ketogenic diet lost up to 2 times more weight than those on a low-calorie diet.

    • Yes – you certainly can! Just get back to your regular eating plan as soon as you can. You will be able to get back into ketosis much quicker than when you first started. It might only take a day. It’s one of the things I like about the keto diet. Once your body has learnt how to use fat for fuel, it can handle short lapses without any problem!
