Way back in the days when I ate pasta for dinner every 2nd night, pasta puttanesca was one of my absolute favorite meals. I’ve longed to find something that comes even close to that delicious, comforting meal!
I’ve tried making a puttanesca sauce and serving it with shirataki noodles or zucchini noodles, but it always lacked that certain WOW factor.
I’m sure you can relate…
WHAT IS PUTTANESCA SAUCE?
Puttanesca is a basic Italian pasta sauce typically made with garlic, tomatoes, olives, capers and anchovies – all good ketogenic-friendly ingredients.
The secret ingredient that takes this dish to the next level is the garlic shrimp. The succulent flesh of shrimp (or prawn) cooked in aromatic garlic and topped with the show-stopping puttanesca sauce is the easiest, healthiest Italian meal you’ll find on a keto or low-carb diet.
Of course, we’ve streamlined the recipe and left out the anchovies and capers to make the recipe quicker and easier, but you’re welcome to add them back in! See the Cooking Tips and Tricks section below for when to add them.

WHAT INGREDIENTS ARE REQUIRED FOR PUTTANESCA?
Puttanesca is a basic Italian pasta sauce originating in Naples and made with olive oil, garlic, tomatoes, olives, capers and anchovies. Spices like oregano and red pepper flakes are sometimes added. This flavorful sauce is typically served over spaghetti pasta and topped with freshly chopped parsley.
ARE SHIRATAKI NOODLES KETO?
Yes, shirataki (also known as konjac) noodles are very low in carbohydrate and therefore suitable for a ketogenic or keto diet. They are made from a fiber called glucomannan which is found in the root of the konjac plant. The konjac plant is found in Asian countries including Japan and China. Shirataki noodles have close to zero carbohydrates and calories making them a good pasta or noodle substitute for anyone following a keto diet.
